內容簡介

The lecture explores the production and diffusion of Chan texts in Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) China, and the ongoing remaking of the teachings and identities of prominent Chan masters who are featured in those texts. Itshowshow as generations of Chanmonks and writers articulated diverse visions of Chan orthodoxy, they attributed aspects of their theoretical outlooks and ideological agendas back to prominent Chan figures from the Tang era, thereby transforming theirreligious personas in light of ever-changing soteriological perspectives and institutional predicaments. These developments are mainly illustrated by an analysis of various sources dealing with the life and teachings of Mazu Daoyi馬祖道一 (709–788).
