The Program in Buddhism and Chinese Culture:

The porgram will be held from July 7 to August 24, 2008. After spending one week in Beijing, where the program will be based in the conference center at the Northern Industrial University北方工业大学会议中心 (5 Jinyuanzhuang Road, District of Shijingshan, Beijing 北京市石景山区晋元庄路5), we will move to Luoyang. In Luoyang, we will ground our program at Baimaisi 白馬寺, the earliest Buddhist temple in China.

Through this program, we are to offer the following seven intensive seminars, each last for three weeks:

Session One: Weeks 1-3 (July 7-27)

1. Jinhua Chen (University of British Columbia), Reading between the Lines: Monastic Biographical and Hagiographical Readings in Medieval East Asia
2.
Max Deeg (Cardiff University), Blissful Cultivation and Violent Conversion: Buddhist Foundation Legends in India, in the Himalayas and in Central Asia
3. Antonello Palumbo (SOAS, University of London): “Religious Propaganda and Apologetics in Medieval China

4. Tansen Sen (City University of New York), “Buddhist Networks in Asian History”

II. Session Two: Weeks 4-6 (July 28-August 24):

5. Buddhism and the harmonization of the contemporary World
6. Toru Funayama (The University of Kyoto), ‘The Encounter of India and China: Chinese Buddhist Translations and Apocrypha”
7. John R. McRae (Komazawa University), “Meditation and Mythology in Chinese Buddhism.”

You are cardinally invited to participate in any of these seminars.

We extend this invitation to you with excitement. We anticipate that with your participation and that of other international and domestic students, a cultural and educational platform will be created for dynamic and refreshing communications between students with different background. We look forward to greeting you, first in Beijing, and then in Luoyang.

Welcome to our program!
